“Inspired by Her” is a tribute to the women who have gone before; especially our elders, the wisdom keepers, our nurturers, mentors and carers who offer advice and love. This piece shows elements of the underlying Emirati tradition and culture, recognising the strength and resilience of women in this harsh desert landscape. The quotes by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan reflect his respect for the important contribution of women historically for social progress and to inspire the present generation of young Emirati women.
Set within an Islamic geometric design popular in the Emirates, this painting comprises symbols of traditional feminine elements: the central henna pattern for celebrations, the perfume bottle surrounded by black khol eye liner, and the burqa. In appreciation of the importance of home making, the central flowers comprise a common design used on metal house gates and the main design ‘petals’ feature a traditional wall relief design used to beautify old villas. The background features the traditional woven mat used to serve food to family and guests and the black surround symbolises the abaya.
