This painting celebrates the pearl [‘Sadaf’ in Arabic]. Pearls have been been prized throughout the ages as a sign of wealth and the pearling industry was a crucial part of Dubai’s history.
Associated with wisdom acquired through experience, the moon and femininity, pearls are believed to symbolize purity, integrity and generosity. In mystical tradition, the pearl has been used to heighten intuition, psychic sensitivity and imagination and to protect from negative energies.
A piece of abalone [paua] shell and antique mother-of-pearl buttons incorporate the beautiful colours of the sea, the foundation of life in the UAE. Like pearls, their soothing colours encourage feelings of love, beauty and comfort. Luminescence catches the light when viewed from different angles.
